A new name for the job
Agent engineer is a newer name for a forward-deployed engineer at an AI company. At Wisq, the job is to make its AI agents work inside each customer’s systems: integrations with HR platforms like Dayforce and knowledge bases like SharePoint, reading API documentation, writing Python, and fixing problems as they come up. It also means presenting to customers as the expert.
What happened
Because the title is so new, very few people hold it. Searching for it mostly turns up AI and machine learning engineers without customer-facing experience, the wrong profile for this role. The right people were more likely to have been forward-deployed engineers, integrations engineers or solutions engineers.
We submitted two candidates. One was hired and started in June 2026.
